EWA President Visits Al Jasra 400kV Transmission Station — Bahrain’s Largest Power Transmission Project to Date
EWA President Visits Al Jasra 400kV Transmission Station
Bahrain’s Largest Power Transmission Project to Date
His Excellency, Eng. Kamal bin Ahmed Mohammed, President of the Electricity and Water Authority (EWA), visited Al Jasra Electricity Transmission Station to review the progress of this strategic initiative — the largest electricity transmission station currently under construction in Bahrain.
HE emphasized that the project marks a major advancement in Bahrain’s energy infrastructure, highlighting that it will reduce the load on the Riffa substation by up to 25%, thereby enhancing grid reliability and stability, minimizing the risk of power outages.
Additionally, the project will ensure the full utilization of power generated from Phase Two of the Al Dur Power Plant, improving load distribution efficiency and supporting Bahrain’s economic and urban development.
During the visit, the President of EWA examined the project’s progress and stressed its importance in strengthening Bahrain’s power grid and its ability to meet future loads. The upgrade from a 220kV to a 400kV connection with GCC countries will enhance network reliability and optimize electricity trade, increasing the grid’s capacity to meet future energy demands.
The Al Jasra Station is a major project being executed in partnership with leading global energy companies, including Siemens (Germany), Hitachi (Japan), Iljin and Taihan (South Korea), and TBEA (China). The project covers the construction of a new 400kV transmission station on a 16,000 square meter site, adding 2,000 MVA in transmission capacity — a 45% increase. It also includes the installation of 130 km of 400kV underground cables (a 92% increase) and the creation of a 220kV sub-transmission system by extending 90 km of 220kV underground cables (a 14% increase).
The new station is set to be operational by 2026, representing a significant milestone in Bahrain’s electricity transmission network. It aligns with EWA’s commitment to delivering high-quality services to citizens and residents.
