Gulf Electricity Conference 2024 Concludes with Key Recommendations to Enhance Sustainability and Regional Energy Integration

The 20th edition of the Gulf Electricity Conference and Exhibition 2024 concluded in the Kingdom of Bahrain, organized by the GCC Regional Committee for Electric Systems (GCC CIGRE) in cooperation with the Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) from November 11 to 13, 2024. The event brought together a distinguished group of experts and researchers to discuss the challenges and opportunities in advancing the energy sector, while showcasing the latest innovations that contribute to the efficiency and sustainability of energy services.

Over the three-day event, technical and scientific sessions were held with wide participation from specialists and researchers, along with notable attendance from university students. The Electricity and Water Authority presented its latest projects and initiatives through papers and panel discussions, reflecting Bahrain’s commitment to aligning with global energy advancements.

Participants praised efforts to strengthen regional cooperation in the electricity and energy sector. Sessions highlighted cutting-edge technologies aimed at enhancing network efficiency and increasing reliance on renewable energy sources. The conference concluded with key recommendations supporting a balanced and sustainable energy transition, emphasizing the need for practical approaches to achieve a carbon-free future that aligns with energy security, reliability, and sustainability goals.

The conference recommended supporting renewable energy investments through clear policies that empower the sector and raise public awareness about the importance of transitioning to clean energy. It also emphasized the expansion of interconnection networks between GCC countries and the development of regional electricity markets to enable effective resource utilization and reduced carbon emissions.

Further recommendations included developing smart infrastructure that integrates artificial intelligence and energy storage systems to enhance grid flexibility and its capacity to accommodate renewable energy, ensuring service continuity even in emergencies.

Additionally, the conference called for increased investment in clean energy projects such as green hydrogen and the improvement of renewable energy forecasting systems to enhance prediction accuracy and efficient grid management. The recommendations also underscored the importance of empowering women and youth in the energy sector through specialized support networks and training programs to develop the skills of young engineers—ensuring continued innovation and sustainable development.

The Gulf Electricity Conference remains a vital annual platform for enhancing collaboration among GCC countries, reinforcing the region’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality and sustainability goals, and shaping a cleaner and more efficient energy future.
